Phil has been involved with the investigation, design, construction and inspection of earth embankment dams for water supply, flood prevention and industrial purposes throughout his career as illustrated below.

Reservoir Inspection and Design

Toddbrook Reservoir – Informal advice given to Canal & River Trust cautioning that upstream face should be checked for a rapid drawdown failure during emergency draining; advice acknowledged by team.

Knostrop Sludge Lagoon – Proposed site of HS2 Rolling Stock Depot above former sludge lagoons from water treatment plant. Provided advice to client and external consultant that the sludge lagoons would fall within the Reservoir Act and any disturbance would require review by a Reservoir Panel Engineer.

Newton Le Willows Ornamental Lake – Informal advice to Owner of ornamental lake which led to repairs to blocked “glory hole” overflow and upstream protective facing replacement.

Balancing Pond near Gatwick – Major housing development on former landfill required supervision of earthwork compaction to SHW and design of balancing pond for flood water run off.

Trunk Roads – Lead Reviewer for Client to determine whether motorway embankments in low lying flood plain would act as water retaining structure and impound water in extreme flood events, requiring advice from a Reservoir Panel Engineer.

Leachate Lagoons – Design and Construction Supervision of new lagoons and repair of existing leachate lagoons at landfill sites, including appointment of Reservoir Panel Engineer, Stability Risk Assessment to EA Standards.

Environment Agency (EA) Design Standard – Preparation of Draft Design Standard for landfill leachate lagoon liners to provide guidance on interface friction.

Kennecott Copper Mine (USA) – Site Investigation and design of tailings lagoon

Wyoming Uranium Mill (USA) – Site Investigation and design of tailings lagoon

Fiddlers Ferry Power Station – Construction Supervision of PFA lagoons

Bristol R&D Centre – Design of remedial works and supervision of construction for water supply impounding reservoir at agriculture R&D centre.

Medway Flood Relief Scheme – Preliminary design and scoping study.

PowderMill Reservoir, Battle, Hastings – Site Investigation and preliminary assessment for downstream raising and source of borrow pit material

Regulation 12 Reports – Site Inspection and Stability Assessment of tailings lagoons at various deep coal mine sites in Yorkshire.

Scammonden Dam M62 – R&D Project at Kings College to develop large scale shear box to determine angle of friction of rockfill.
